Commentaire: Jez Butterworth's smash hit play The Ferryman, directed by Sam Mendes, transfers to Broadway, where it began previews on October 2, 2018, and officially opened to rave reviews on October 21.

The Ferryman became the fastest-selling show in the history of London's Royal Court Theatre and, following a sold-out run at the venue in spring 2017, the epic drama - both in concept and scale - transferred to the Gielgud Theatre for a twice-extended run in the West End and continued to garner critical acclaim and a plethora of accolades, including the Olivier Award for "Best New Play".

Although The Ferryman is laced with the intricacies of the political unrest of the 1980's in Northern Ireland - a time referred to as 'The Troubles' - no prior background knowledge is necessary to feel moved by this exquisitely written portrait of a family in crisis. The play's central themes of love, loss, and grief will resonate with you, no matter where you're from and no matter what your background. The family in question is the Carney family and we join them at their rural farmhouse as they are about to celebrate the annual harvest. But as this multi-generational, extended family gather together, secrets of the past are unearthed in a living tapestry of lies, betrayals and hidden truths.

As has become somewhat of a signature for Jez Butterworth, whose previous Broadway credits include the Tony-nominated masterpiece Jerusalem and the Hugh Jackman-led three-hander The River, The Ferryman is at times lyrical and mystical in its writing, drawing inspiration from Irish mythology. This element is anchored by the character of Aunt Maggie Far Away, who drifts in and out of dementia to regale younger members of the family with stories of old and prophecies for the future. She even forewarns of the fate of the Carney family, as the figurative tidal wave moves ever closer to the farmhouse by the play's conclusion.

With a huge ensemble cast - that also includes babies, rabbits and geese - all the pieces of this extraordinary puzzle receive their moment in the spotlight and come together with a pace that creeps up on the audience, catching us off-guard at every twist and turn. So many of Butterworth's characters are relatable - even in their extreme views or circumstances. You understand their pain, their motivations and their searing loss. After 3 hours and 15 minutes - which all too tellingly fly by - you feel a part of this family, inextricably woven together.

The Ferryman is a theatrical experience unlike any other in recent Broadway history - as utterly shocking as it is enchanting. Allow yourselves a trip across the River Styx to the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, courtesy of The Ferryman, and let your wandering soul be fulfilled.  (plus)

Commentaire: Arguably the most acclaimed piece of theatre from the hand of esteemed playwright Eugene O'Neill, The Iceman Cometh once again to the Broadway stage. The central character of Hickey is a dream role for many an accomplished actor and now the honor falls to Tony and two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington…

Tony and two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington returns to Broadway in Eugene O'Neill's classic The Iceman Cometh. The play follows Hickey, a troubled alcoholic who takes it upon himself to dissuade fellow drinkers in a NYC bar to give up their pipe dreams and face the harsh realities of life, uncovering the secrets of his own past in the process.  (plus)

Commentaire:

Presse: "“Bandstand,” an openhearted, indecisive new musical, wants you clapping your hands and clenching your fists, tapping your toes and blinking back tears. It is both a peppy celebration of can-do spirit and a more somber exploration of what American servicemen experienced when they marched home from World War II." Alexis Soloski for New York Times

"Music soothes the savage beast and — apparently — shell shocked servicemen. That’s the prevailing wisdom of “Bandstand,” the well-meaning mishmash of a musical at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"Director-choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler (Hamilton) doesn’t stint on period vitality; the terrific group dance numbers, including an Act I showstopper called “You Deserve It,” burst with snazzy individuality. But Bandstand’s heart is in its shadows—the entertainers often share the stage with ghosts of lost comrades—and in the persistence of its efforts to shed light on them... The show defies you not to be moved by its valiant band of brothers." Adam Feldman for Time Out New York

"With nary a false note in this revised production, "Bandstand" creates sweet harmony from the dissonance of war." Roma Torre for NY1

"Uneasily attempting to be simultaneously a feel-good, swinging musical and a serious depiction of post-traumatic stress, Bandstand is at war with itself... For all the strenuous effort and good intentions evident in Bandstand, it mainly demonstrates that if you’re going to drop the name Dachau in a musical, it needs to be far better than this one." Frank Scheck for Hollywood Reporter

"There’s a different “band of brothers” on stage in “Bandstand,” the earnest and often-entertaining musical that, set immediately following WWII, never quite achieves its noble ambitions. Despite the fluid staging and evocative choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler (“Hamilton”), an uneven book, undistinguished dialogue and only-serviceable tunes keep the show from meeting its deeper, darker and good-intentioned aspirations." Frank Rizzo for Variety

Presse: Les critiques sont très bonnes:

"Give thanks this morning, children of Broadway, and throw in a hearty hallelujah. 'The Color Purple' has been born again, and its conversion is a glory to behold." Ben Brantley for New York Times

"'The Color Purple' is bolder, brighter and deeper than ever." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"The show works in a primal way. Its pop-inflected score — though performed here on the cheap, with a skimpy, keyboard-heavy band — has surprising staying power. Your head may quibble, but your heart’s on board." Elisabeth Vincentelli for New York Post

"This Color Purple is a celebration of black women, and it fills you with appreciation for the musical’s return. It’s here, and it’s beautiful." Adam Feldman for Time Out New York

"To those who question why a revival of 'The Color Purple' is back on Broadway after its predecessor closed there only in 2008, the answer is two words, and it may not be the two words you expect. Cynthia Erivo." Mark Kennedy for Associated Press

"This revelatory overhaul is characterized by its grace, restraint and soaring spirituality, peeling back the excess to expose the life-affirming material's molten emotional core. It remakes a patchy musical as a thrilling one." David Rooney for Hollywood Reporter

"Jennifer Hudson is radiant as the love machine Shug Avery. Danielle Brooks shakes the house as the earthy Sofia. And Cynthia Erivo, the tiny pint of dynamite who originated the role at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London, brings the audience roaring to its feet as Celie." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Commentaire: Sera joué successivement au

> Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre 23/1/15 - 7/6/15

The play was originally called "Broadway, Broadway" and had closed during tryouts in Philadelphia in 1978. Geraldine Page and James Coco were in the Philadelphia cast, and the play was set to open on Broadway at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre. However, the Philadelphia reviews were negative and the Broadway opening was cancelled.
In 1984, McNally said that after "Broadway, Broadway" closed he was no longer confident, but finally realized that having a show close is not the worst thing that could happen. For the Broadway run the play was rewritten to bring the story and references up to 2014. The role of Emma was cut and replaced by Gus, an aspiring actor employed as the party's butler.  (plus)

Presse: "All the cast members fulfill their raisons d’être, which is to sling a whole lot of mud in the nicest possible way. As for Mr. McNally’s play itself...it mostly has the depth of a shot glass (and I mean that in the nicest possible way). It is to Broadway what Neil LaBute’s 'The Money Shot,'...is to Hollywood - an R-rated sitcom satire with some very funny jokes." Ben Brantley for New York Times

"Besides good old dependable Nathan Lane, this diversion has good timing going for it. People are desperate for laughs and comedies on Broadway are bloody rare. If only McNally’s 'Play' was more well-done." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"Mullally and Lane alone are almost worth the price of admission, with a sense of timing that’s a thing of wonder. As for the rest? It’s barely a play." Elisabeth Vincentelli for New York Post

"Jack O’Brien’s shiny, bouncy production looks great and hey it’s McNally: there are good bitchy one-liners here and there. But too few. Only a play? It’s barely a play." David Cote for Time Out New York/NY1

"It seemed to be a dream cast: Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, Stockard Channing, Megan Mullally, F. Murray Abraham. But, like children, stars don't always play well together. The result is that Terrence McNally's comedy 'It's Only a Play' is only amusing rather than drop-dead funny." Robert Feldberg for The Record

"Theatergoers who pay top dollar – and higher – to see the show will not be disappointed by its classy looks and energetic playing, even though 'It’s Only A Play' winds down long before it is over." Michael Sommers for New Jersey Newsroom

"It's in Lane's dynamite early scenes with gifted newcomer Micah Stock that this funny if flimsy comedy really fires on all cylinders, while Broderick underwhelms in a key role." David Rooney for The Hollywood Reporter

"Laugh if you must — and you really must laugh at McNally’s unquenchable wit — but those sloppy-kiss tributes to the theater delivered by Peter and James are deeply felt and honestly moving. And if you don’t share the gooey sentiments, you really shouldn’t be at this show." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Presse: "I can’t imagine that anyone who isn’t in early adolescence would be crazy about “13,” the shiny and brash new musical about growing up geeky." (Ben Brantley-New York Times)
"Thirteen is notorious for being a jinxed number, and anyone heading to "13" hoping to find a story they haven't seen at least a hundred times before is out of luck." & "The pubescent crowd may find this new musical fascinating — but Mom and Dad will be left thinking about 13 better ways they could have spent their ticket dollars." (Joe Dziemianowicz-New York Daily News)
"Disarmingly charming new musical." & "The perfect show for those too old for Disney, too young for "Spring Awakening." (Barbara Hoffman-New York Post)
"Driven fast by catchy, dynamic rhythms and colorful orchestrations, Brown's 16-song score is light, fresh and always tuneful in nature. Smart lyrics and a wide sampling of song styles ... keep the musical energy level zooming as the intermission-free show speeds along." & "Expect nothing fancy from "13" -- just a sincerely good time." (Michael Sommers-Star-Ledger)
"..as ailing as our economy.." & "Some of the 13 performers are actually 13; other may be old enough to know better. But 13 or not, they come across almost as juvenile as the perpetrators of this infantile concoction." (John Simon-Bloomberg)
"13 is, if hardly awesome (not even in the lesser sense of the word), an innocuous and sometimes touching diversion." (Elysa Gardner-USA Today)
"A smart, fun look at the joys and agonies of growing up." & "Sweet little gem of a show." & "Director Jeremy Sams and choreographer Christopher Gattelli have assembled an energetic and versatile ensemble of youngsters and shown them off to sparkling advantage. .....and they're not syrupy sweet or overly brash in the way too many professional child actors can be." (David Sheward-Back Stage)
"The story, directed without distinction by Jeremy Sams, sort of stops rather than builds to a conclusion....The book, by Dan Elish and Robert Horn, is so chopped-up, careless and obvious it almost seems no more than a bridge between Jason Robert Brown's songs." & "They (the cast) come across not as typical youngsters, but as professional performers who happen to be teenagers. (Robert Feldberg-The Record)
"Musically robust but surprisingly thin in the story department" & "If the story meanders, the music does not...a lively, highly listenable score." & "It's in the music where "13" often springs to life. His (Brown's) melodies are tuneful and his lyrics quirky enough to surprise you." (Michael Kuchwara-Associated Press)
"There's not much in this sweet all-adolescent tuner to engage anyone past puberty." & "If the story had been told with more wit, complexity or universal insight, there might have been something here for the rest of us." & "Brown's melodic songs are well crafted and do the job of bumping the thin story along ... But the composer's work tends to bounce around in tone and rhythm, making it difficult to sing for performers whose voices are still developing." (David Rooney-Variety)

Commentaire: Like Hair and A Chorus Line before it, The Human Comedy garnered reviews favorable enough to prompt Papp to transfer it a larger, uptown Broadway house. After twenty previews, with its downtown director and cast intact, it opened on April 5, 1984 at the Royale Theatre, where it ran for only 13 performances. The general reaction being this was more an oratorio for the concert platform rather than a conventional theatre.

Frank Rich's critique of the original production had been positive, but New York Times policy prohibited re-reviewing shows unless they were changed substantially, so his earlier comments were overshadowed by those damaging ones made more recently by Clive Barnes, among others. The general consensus was that The Human Comedy, with its intimate story staged in a semi-oratorio style with no scenery save for rear projections used to define each scene's locale, was not suited for a large venue with a conventional proscenium stage. Following Dude and Via Galactica, it was MacDermot's third critical and commercial failure, and proved to be his last attempt at a Broadway musical.
